New animals for zoo

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A team of officials from the city zoo will leave for Mumbai next week to bring over a male elephant. Over the next few months, the zoo is expected to get a variety of animals from different zoos across the country.

While a pair of Indian Wild Buffalo is expected from the Mysore zoo, a pair of Hanuman Langur is scheduled to make its way here from the zoo at Nandankanan, Orissa. Similarly, negotiations are on for fetching a female giraffe from Alipur near Kolkata.

There are also plans to bring over a pair of lions from the Vandallur zoo, zoo director Elcy George said here. A few species of birds may also be got from various zoos.

Zoo superintendent S. Abu said these animals might not be brought at one go but rather in phases. "The paperwork relating to the elephant and the giraffe are in the final stages. Talks are on for the rest of the animals. Anyway, these are our targets for the year 2007-08," he explained.

According to Ms. George, the zoo had also written to the Central Zoo Authority seeking permission to bring over a jaguar.

The administrative sanction for building a pseudo-habitat enclosure for the jaguar was given to the zoo authorities.

Modernisation

The zoo director has scheduled a meeting with the Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department to discuss ways of speeding up the construction activities related to the ongoing Zoo Modernisation Programme.

The construction of the new house is yet to be completed.

Ms. George said the non-availability of adequate construction material was one of the reasons for the delay. "Anyhow, we have definitely decided to speed up the construction work," she said.
