HYDERABAD: Every student admitted to post graduate programmes of the University of Hyderabad (UoH) will receive a monthly scholarship of Rs. 1,000 provided they are not getting fellowship from any other source. As per the new scheme, all P.G. students of the university pursuing MA, M.Sc, MCA, MBA, MPA and MFA in various disciplines will be paid the scholarship for four semesters. For MCA students this will be for six semesters. However, those students who are currently receiving financial assistance from the Social Welfare Department or other kind of financial assistance will only be paid the differential amount.
New scheme
The scheme has been devised following the UGC's new scheme to encourage students not covered by any scholarship, according to UoH Registrar Y. Narsimhulu. Students receiving fellowship or contingency from other funding agencies like CSIR, UGC, Rajiv Gandhi fellowship SCs and STs and fellowships sponsored by various other national bodies are also not eligible. Foreign students and masters students pursuing research programmes under external or part-time will also not be eligible. Students pursuing their second P.G. course also fall in the same category. Students pursuing M.Tech programmes will get enhanced fellowship of Rs. 3,000 per month for a period of two years (four semesters), while M.Phil scholars will be eligible only for one year. Ph.D. scholars will be paid a monthly fellowship of Rs.5,000 for a period of eight semesters (four years). Under exceptional cases the fellowships may be extended for an additional year. The university is also starting a new scheme for post-graduate students under the University Achievers Award from the academic year 2007-08. The Registrar, Mr. Narsimhulu, said students scoring the highest marks in the preceding semester in any masters programme will be given scholarships worth Rs 2,000 per month, which would be valid for a semester and could be extended provided the awardee continues to receive the highest marks in subsequent semesters.
Contingency grant
He said the university has also decided to give a contingency grant of Rs.8,000 per annum additionally for students pursuing M.Phil or Ph.D. programme in humanities and social sciences. For students who are pursuing programmes in sciences, this amount will be Rs.10,000. For all the scholarships students will have to put up 75 per cent attendance. He said the money will be deducted from the mess bill every month and students have to give an authorisation for this.
