Nandigram firing: KPCC to collect fund for victims

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee has sought a probe by a woman judge of the Supreme Court into the Nandigram firing. It has also urged the National Women's Commission and the National Human Rights Commission to initiate an inquiry into the atrocities on farmers allegedly committed by the police and CPI (M) cadres masquerading as cops.

Addressing a press conference here soon after arriving from a visit to Nandigram, KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala and other delegation members - G. Karthikeyan, M. M. Hassan and K. V. Thomas - said that the West Bengal Chief Minister should resign taking full responsibility for the police atrocities in Nandigram. (M. I. Shanavas was the fifth member of the delegation, but he was not present at the press meet). Mr. Chennithala also wanted CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat to make a visit to Nandigram to understand the tension prevailing in the area. The State CPI (M) leadership's reactions on Nandigram firing justifying it were `unfortunate.' Mr. Chennithala said that the KPCC would hold a fund raising campaign on April 2. Named the Nandigram martyrs' fund, Congress workers would collect contributions from the people.

The amount would be utilised to provide succour to the families of those killed in the firing, he said. The Congress party would stage dharnas in front of the State secretariat and the 13 district collectorates on Thursday in protest against the anti-people polices of the Left Democratic Front Government.
