BANGALORE: Well-known ornithologist Zafar Futehally has called for urgent water saving measures in the city because there had not been a single drop of rain since October. Conservation and equitable distribution of water must be the first concern of the State Government, he said in a letter. He said this was the first time in several years that such a situation had arisen. The next rainfall could only be expected in July and hence there was a need to conserve water. The Government should pass orders to stop use of hosepipes for washing cars and promote use of minimum water for the cleaning of windscreens. It needed to stop watering gardens and medians. Lawns had a remarkable capacity to revive immediately after the rains and hence a few months dryness would not matter to them. A determined effort should be made to save the available water to ensure that there was no wastage. Countries such as Australia, which suffered drought occasionally, passed such orders, he said. Mr. Futehally urged the Government to consider the interests of Bangaloreans who might have to face an exceptionally difficult summer.
