KOCHI: The Planning Commission has agreed to allocate Rs.10 crore to the Lakshadweep administration to build a dedicated berth for its ships and cargo vessels at the Kochi port. A release from the administration said the commission also agreed to finance the establishment of a Rs.1.50-crore polytechnic in Lakshadweep. Amenities for tourists, such as lodging, would be built at a cost of Rs.5 crore. Refuelling facilities for vessels would be set up at Minicoy, Androth and Agatti and the Kavaratti facility would be upgraded. The Rs.3 crore needed for the refuelling facilities would come from the Rs.28 crore extra money the commission would earmark for the islands. The commission agreed in principle to support the Rs.222.11-crore annual budget sought by the administration. This would be the largest annual budget for Lakshadweep, the release said. Administrator B.V. Selvaraj, a team of officials and Lakshadweep MP P. Pookunhikoya met the Planning Commission Working Group on Monday to present their case for a large annual budget.
