KOCHI: It was an eye-opener of sorts for the city police personnel. Not many of the participants at the awareness class on the Right To Information Act 2005 knew about the potential and possibilities of the Act. The class was organised by the Kerala Police Officers' Association at the City Traffic (West) police station. The class was inaugurated by K.P. Lailaram, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Control Room). Nearly 70 personnel from the police stations in the city limit attended the class. There were doubts on whether the Act could be used to get information regarding their services. D.B. Binu, editor of Niyama Sameeksha, cleared the doubts and told the gathering that they were entitled to get basic rights as a common citizen. He explained that the Act had provisions to turn down applications for getting details of cases under investigation. A. Anil Kumar, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Administration), who is also the information officer for the city police, was present. K. Laljy, Circle Inspector, Palluruthy, and State president of the KPOA, presided. D.S. Suneesh Babu, Circle Inspector, City Traffic (West), and vice-president of KPOA, Kochi City; P.C. Kunjukunju, KPOA State executive member; and M.M. Mohan, KPOA Kochi City secretary, spoke.
