KOCHI: Ernakulam General Hospital is getting advanced facilities for the treatment of cancer including a Telecobalt Unit and Brachitherapy Unit. Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy will inaugurate the new facilities on March 25, the Collector said.
Central assistance
The new facilities and the treatment planning system were installed as part of a Union Government-assisted programme. A fund of Rs.2.75 crore was allocated under a Central Government scheme for purchasing the equipment. Fisheries Minister S.Sarma will inaugurate the beautified campus of the Hospital on March 25 evening.
KRL help
The hospital campus was beautified with the financial assistance provided by Kochi Refineries Limited (KRL). The KRL contributed Rs.45 lakh for beautifying the hospital premises. The former Supreme Court Judge V.R. Krishna Iyer will make the keynote address at the meeting. PWD Minister T.U. Kuruvila, K.Chandran Pillai, Sebastian Paul, MPs, K.V. Thomas, C.M. Dinesh Mani and M.M. Yousef, MLAs, will attend the function. The addition of the modern equipment at the hospital is expected to provide succour to the financially backward patients. Brachitherapy, an advanced form of radiotherapy where the radioactive source is placed inside or next to the area requiring treatment, is a mode of treatment used commonly for prostate cancer. The Health Minister is expected to announce a special package of Rs.1.25 crore for the hospital for improving its performance. The amount will be utilised for installing a CT Scan unit, the Collector said.
