THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city police have arrested three persons in connection with the murder of Democratic Youth Front of India (DYFI) activist Anish, 23, who was stabbed to death in front of the local office of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) at Murinjapalam on Sunday. The accused were identified as "Moda" Rajesh, 24, his brother, Suresh, 23, and cousin Shiju, 24. Circle Inspector, Medical College, V. Suresh Kumar said the suspects had been expelled last year from the DYFI on the charge of anti-social activity. They had been making attempts to rejoin the Left youth wing organisation at the behest of some local leaders for the past several months. However, Anish, an executive committee member of the DYFI Murinjapalam unit, had stiffly resisted their moves. The suspects and DYFI workers led by Anish got entangled in a drunken brawl near the Murinjapalm bridge at 11.30 p.m. on Sunday. "Moda" Rajesh, who was wielding a long knife, stabbed Anish on the upper part of his thigh. The CI said the knife penetrated the lower part of the victim's abdomen, causing intense bleeding and later death. Rajesh was arrested from his relative's house at Pulinkudi. His brother and cousin were arrested from Vizhinjam bus stand. The accused were produced before the court on the charges of assault and murder and remanded in judicial custody for a period of 14 days.
Kidnapping: three held
The police have arrested two wanted men in connection with the kidnapping of a 68-year-old retired executive engineer from his house at Poojappura in November 2006. The accused were identified as Binu Das, 24, and Thachankara Rajesh, 23. Both are "violent and active" criminals according to police records. Circle Inspector, Peroorkada, M. Radhakrishnan Nair, said the accused had kidnapped one Basheer Koya from his house at Poojappura at 10 a.m. on November 22, 2006. The CI said Koya was kidnapped at the behest of one Nazir, a real estate broker. Nazir had demanded excess brokerage from Koya for executing a land deal, which the retired engineer had refused. Koya was abducted from his house and taken to a remote location in Malayankeezhu where he was made to sign several cheques, promissory notes affixed with revenue stamps and stamp papers. The case was reported to the police several days after the incident. The suspects were hiding in a safe house at Yelhanka near Bangalore. The police arrested them when they arrived to meet their contacts in Peroorkada on Tuesday. The accused were produced before the court on charges of dacoity, illegal detention and extortion and remanded in judicial custody for a period of 14 days.
