Construction of park on Ridge stayed
A Division Bench comprising Justice M.K. Sharma and Justice Sanjiv Khanna stayed the construction on a public interest litigation by Vinod Kumar Jain of voluntary body Tapas seeking protection of the Ridge in the Capital. Mr. Jain submitted that construction activities on the Ridge could affect the quality of the ground water adversely.
Vow to fight against forced land acquisition
Addressing a joint public meeting at Jantar Mantar here, Narmada Bachao Andolan leader Medha Patkar said after plundering the hills of the Adivasis, the big corporate houses have now turned their attention towards the fertile agricultural lands of Punjab and Haryana. Raising the issue of the rights of Dalits and landless labour, Ms. Patkar criticised the Government for providing telephone and electricity facilities at subsidised rates in cities, but denying a fair price to farmers for their produce.
Alleged suicide by retired official
According to the police, Jaipal, a former accountant, jumped off Platform No. 1 at 11-20 a.m. A resident of West Moti Bagh, Jaipal had reportedly not been keeping well and also facing financial problems.
Missing newborn baby recovered
According to the police, 38-year-old Sunita Pawar was issueless even 14 years after her marriage. She faked pregnancy and planned to kidnap a baby from the hospital at the expected day of "delivery''. Accordingly, she kidnapped the newborn baby of Shobha and remained admitted in the hospital for post-natal care. After the missing complaint was registered on Tuesday, the police interrogated the hospital staff and recovered the baby.
Two Ethiopian women arrested
The two were brought to the Delhi Cantonment police station by some people who alleged that they were being illegally detained by some Military Intelligence officials. Investigations revealed that they had come to India on six-month visas last June, but had overstayed.
