Dharmapuri: Collector Pankaj Kumar Bansal asked Panchayats presidents to accord top priority to development works. Addressing a mass contact programme at Pennagaram on Thursday, he said that development works to the tune of Rs.15 lakh were implemented at Badrahalli panchayat in Pennagaram block during 2006-07. It included construction of group houses and open wells, installation of deep borewells and maintenance of drainage canals. The distribution of identity cards to farmers under the Tamil Nadu Agricultural Labourers (Social Security and Welfare Scheme) would be completed before the end of this fiscal.
In the wake of an acute drinking water scarcity, farmers should adopt effective water management practices including drip and sprinkler irrigation to increase their productivity. The district administration has sent a proposal to the State Government to take up road-improvement works to a length of 5 km at Oothupallathur village in Pennagaram at Rs.44 lakh. The Collector distributed welfare assistance to the tune of Rs.4.94 lakh to 33 beneficiaries during the programme. As many as 273 petitions were received by the Collector. Joint Director Agriculture K.K. Duraisamy was present.
