This Day That Age
Despite the stout challenge offered by the two Leftist alliances, the Congress Party was on March 22 voted back to power in West Bengal. The Communists, having already won 40 seats, have, for the first time, emerged as the official Opposition party. The Praja Socialists have so far secured 20 seats. The bulk of Calcutta's 26 seats have gone to the Leftists, which is a complete reversal of the position in the last elections, when the Congress secured 17 city seats. Now the Leftists have already captured 16 out of a total of 26 seats and are likely to gain a few more. Mr. Jyoti Basu, the Communist leader, was re-elected to the State Assembly from the Baranagar constituency.
