Where music gently heals

Overcrowded wards, grimy floors, peeling paint, ancient furniture... cash-strapped Government hospitals have always been the same.

However, the newly commissioned five-storeyed block of Women and Children Hospital at Thycaud has become the envy of all other Government hospitals.

All modern comforts have been installed here, but one component which the hospital authorities took a special interest in was the installation of a music system at Rs.2.5 lakh.

The idea was, in fact, suggested by music director M.G. Radhakrishnan, who, on a visit to the hospital, spoke about the healing power of music.

Soothing classical/instrumental music will be played in the casualty, out-patient clinics, outside the operation theatre, and inside the labour room, post-natal and post-surgical wards in the hospital.

"Music will help bring down the stress levels in patients as well as visitors. It will help patients forget their pain, soothe frayed nerves and generally put everyone in a better temperament," hospital superintendent R. Babu says. Mr. Radhakrishnan has promised to offer his advice and suggestions on the kind of music to be played during various times and seasons, he adds.
