CHENNAI: Karan Rastogi (ONGC) scripted a 6-4, 6-4 win over Divij Sharan (IOC) in the men's semifinals of the Petroleum Sports Promotion Board inter-unit tennis tournament at the SDAT-Nungambakkam Stadium here on Thursday. Serving well and hitting the ball with confidence, Karan had things pretty much under control throughout the match. Karan came up with more winners than Divij, who looked subdued. The crucial break for Karan came in the ninth game of the second set. Divij hit a series of forehand and backhand shots wide and finally a forehand passing shot by Karan fetched him the lone break of the set. He then served out the match at love. The second semifinal will be played on Friday morning between Sanam Singh (IOC) and Sunil Kumar (IOC).
Bopanna pulls out
Earlier, the top-seed Rohan Bopanna (IOC) pulled out of the singles quarterfinals against Sunil Kumar. Having got back his rightful place in the Davis Cup tie against Kazakhstan, Bopanna decided to give a walkover. "I have been playing non-stop since September 2006. I wanted to rest. And moreover I want to prepare for the Davis Cup," said Bopanna. The tournament is being organised by BPCL.
