NEW DELHI: Over a week after the World Cup began, Doordarshan is yet to send a team to the West Indies. Admitting this at a press conference here on Thursday, Prasar Bharati Chief Executive Officer B.S. Lalli, however, refused to divulge details as to why a team had not been sent till date.
Awaiting clearances
But, he did indicate that a team was to have been sent and that the public broadcaster was awaiting clearances. Mr. Lalli said Prasar Bharati was hopeful of getting more pay channels on board Doordarshan's Direct-to-Home network.
Free-to-air service
Doordarshan's DTH platform would, however, remain a free-to-air service, as this was its main USP, he said. Doordarshan's DTH service would shift from NSS-6 satellite to INSAT-4B, which was launched recently. This would not only save Prasar Bharati valuable foreign exchange but would also ensure better coverage of the country only subscribers would need to carry out a minor realignment of their antenna. Another project that Doordarshan was upbeat about was the mobile TV service, which has been successfully tested in Delhi and is likely to be replicated in Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. Four Doordarshan channels were being transmitted on the mobile TV service on an experimental basis though the DVB-H system had a capacity to carry eight channels. Referring to reports that Doordarshan had favoured one mobile phone manufacturer while testing this service, Mr. Lalli clarified that Prasar Bharati was vendor-neutral and all manufacturers were open to join the endeavour.
