VELLORE: A sum of Rs.86 crore has been allotted in the 2007-08 Railway budget for the on-going gauge conversion work in the Katpadi-Villupuram metre gauge section, Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu said. Talking to newspersons here on Thursday, Mr. Velu said the amount included Rs.84 lakh allotted for the renovation of the Vellore Cantonment railway station and the Tiruvannamalai railway station and for the formation of the broad gauge track in these two stations. A sum of Rs. six crore has been allotted for the electrification of the new broad gauge track between Katpadi and Vellore Cantonment. While the work on the railway bridge across the Palar river between Katpadi and Vellore Cantonment has been completed, the Commissioner of Safety, Railways has given clearance for one of the spans in the railway overbridge across the Katpadi-Jolarpet track where an overhead electric line was passing. The work on the span would be completed in another four months. The gauge conversion work was in progress in different sections between Vellore Cantonment and Tiruvannamalai.
Realignment of track
In Kaniyambadi, where sharp curves are there in the rail route, steps are being taken to realign the track in order that there are no restrictions on the speed of the train at those points. "We are trying to complete the gauge conversion work before the end of the year", he said.
