HYDERABAD: Dilbagh Singh of Railways surprised D. Bhagyarajan of Services, silver medallist in the last September's World Military Games, in the quarterfinal of the light welter weight category of the 53rd senior National boxing championship at Swarnandhra Pradesh Indoor Stadium (Gachibowli) here on Thursday. Dilbagh, a former national champion, displayed better speed and precision in landing his punches against Bhagyarajan who looked out of sorts in a 14-21 defeat.
Biggest upset
In the biggest upset of the championship late on Wednesday night, Narender Yadav of Andhra Pradesh knocked out Doha Asian Games bronze medallist Verghese Johnson in the second round of the super heavy weight category. The 22-year-old, unemployed trainee of SAAP Academy (Lal Bahadur Stadium, Hyderabad) unleashed a series of powerful right hooks which had the fancied rival on the mat in the 30th second of the second round. Earlier, the Andhra boxer, trained by Omkar Yadav, came back from an early 1-10 deficit. Narender's previous best achievement at the national level was only a bronze in the Federation Cup.
