Sugarcane grower commits suicide

Bidar: A sugarcane grower committed suicide on Thursday after sugar factories refused to buy his crop. Shivanand Veershetty Biradar, 48, hanged himself in his house at Tirakatnalli in Humnabad taluk.

He had taken a loan of Rs. 1 lakh from the primary land development bank and the agriculture credit cooperative society, which he planned to repay after his crop was harvested. But he became desperate when he could not sell his crop, his family members said.

A case has been registered at the Bagdal police station. — Staff Correspondent

Ashraya scheme deadline extended

Bangalore: Housing Minister D.T. Jayakumar has said that the deadline for selecting eligible beneficiaries for Ashraya sites/houses in rural areas for 2006-07 has been extended up to March 31.

He informed the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday that the list of people without houses or sites had been drawn up in May-June 2003. The beneficiaries would be selected from that list, the minister said. — Staff Reporter

Panel on railway projects to be formed

BANGALORE: Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa has said that the Government will constitute a committee to look into the details of pending and proposed railway projects in the State. Responding to a suggestion made by M.P. Nadagouda (JD-U) in the Legislative Council on Thursday, he said the State was keen on infrastructure development, particularly air and rail connectivity, because of the growing importance of Bangalore at the international level.

KLE varsity conducts counselling

Belgaum: KLE University, Belgaum, conducted the first round of counselling of successful candidates of the KLE-PGAIET (KLE University Postgraduate All-India Entrance Test) for admission to PG medical/dental courses at the constituent colleges of the university, here on Thursday.

Those who secured the first 100 ranks in the merit list were called for counselling. The counselling for the remaining candidates (1,104) will be from March 22 to 27. — Staff Correspondent

People stage dharna for water

Kolar: Residents of several layouts here staged a dharna at bus stand circle demanding drinking water supply and other amenities.

Citizens, including a large number of women from Karanjikatte, Shantinagar, Muneshwarnagar and Nyamatbi darga layouts, participated in the protest holding empty pots.

They raised slogans against authorities for their failure to provide basic amenities such as roads and drinking water in their localities.

Assistant executive engineer Honnaiah and Headquarters Assistant Babanna met the protesters and promised action. — Staff Correspondent

Kambalapalli: appeal filed in High Court

BANGALORE: The State Government has filed an appeal in the Karnataka High Court challenging the trial court's acquittal of all the 46 accused in the carnage in Kambalapalli village of Kolar district. Seven Dalits were burnt alive in the village on March 11, 2000.

In a reply to S.S. Patil (Congress), Minister for Home M.P. Prakash said the Government has appointed Ravivarma Kumar as a public prosecutor to argue the case in the Karnataka High Court. — Special Correspondent

Bagepalli: The Janata Dal (S)-Bharatiya Janata Party coalition Government was wasting time by only giving assurances to the people, MLA for Chintamani M.C. Sudhakar has charged.

Protest seeking better amenities

TUMKUR: Residents of the Goods Shed Colony Slum Areas in Tumkur staged a dharna in front of a school building there on Thursday demanding better civic amenities.

`Abhivriddhi', a forum for Tumkur city development led the agitation.

The residents expressed their ire over the poor state of the overhead water tank, abandoned primary school building, bad condition of anganwadi centres, encroachments upon parks and playfields, destruction of the Upparahalli tank and bad roads and drains in the areas. — Staff Correspondent

Inter-collegiate cultural festival

TUMKUR: `Flair-2007', the two-day national level inter-collegiate cultural festival will begin at Channabasaveshwara Institute of Technology (CIT) here on Friday.

CIT secretary G.B. Jyoti Ganesh, told presspersons that student representatives from various engineering colleges across the country would take part in it.

Mr. Ganesh said over fifty events would be held.

He said the main objective of the festival was to promote national integration.

The former Tumkur MP, G.S. Basavaraju, would inaugurate the festival.

Desilting of tank

Kolar Gold Fields: S. Rajendran, MLA, launched the desilting of Varandahalli tank here on Wednesday. As the tank provides drinking water to KGF and surrounding villages of Urigaon, the work should be completed quickly, he instructed the officials.

The Government had sanctioned Rs. 50 lakh for the work, Mr. Rajendran said. Urban water supply board engineers Rajgopal, Raveendra, Minor Irrigation Department official Chandra and municipal commissioner Hanumanthappa were present. — Staff Correspondent

Road accident

HASSAN: Former District Horticulture Officer Nagaraju died in a road accident near Shantigrama on Thursday. He was 60. Mr. Nagaraju had been returning from Arsikere by a Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus, and when he alighted he was hit by a lorry. He died on the spot. He is survived by his wife and three children. — Staff Correspondent

Reservation

HASSAN: Of the 35 wards under the Hassan City Municipal Council (CMC), 22 are reserved and 13 are in the general category. Of the 22 wards, seven are reserved for women, two for the Scheduled Castes, one for the Scheduled Tribes, seven for the BCM(A) category, three for BCM (Woman) and two for BCM(B).

According to sources, this time there would be no rotation in reservation as some wards would continue under the prevailing norms. Deputy Commissioner K.H. Aswathanarayana Gowda, who is the District Returning Officer, finalised the reservation list. — Staff Correspondent

Protest

Chitradurga: Several students of Government Tools and Training Centre (GTTC) here on Thursday staged a protest opposing the distribution of stipends through cheques. The protesters, under the banner of the National Students Union of India (NSUI), said that the Social Welfare Department, under which the course comes, was asking the students to open bank accounts to encash their cheques. They said it was illogical to open accounts just to collect cheques of Rs. 1,500 each.

They also alleged that the department had reduced the training period from six months to three months. The protesters urged the Social Welfare Department to extend the course period and distribute the stipend in cash. — Staff Correspondent

Appeal

BIJAPUR: The newly-formed Karnataka State Ph.D. Holders' Forum has urged the Government and universities to consider their degrees while extending increments and other benefits.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, forum president Geeta Patil said one of the major demands was that the Ph.D. holders working in degree colleges must be allowed to guide research students. — Staff Correspondent

Appointed

Bidar: Shailendra Beldale has been appointed general secretary of the District BJP Yuva Morcha. The appointment comes into effect immediately, according to a release by the Morcha district unit president Anil Gundappa Biradar. — Staff Correspondent

Strike withdrawn

BIJAPUR: Members of the Bijapur Slum Abbhivriddhi Samiti withdrew their four-day-old indefinite fast after Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mohsin called on them on Thursday evening, and agreed to meet some of their demands. Mr. Mohsin said steps would be taken to accord slum tag to areas such as Khajanagar, Kanakibazaar, Bashanagar, Basaribhavi and Ganeshnagar within a month. — Staff Correspondent

Belgaum: The city-based Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre will organise "Ex-Servicemen Rally" under the aegis of the Station Headquarter, MLIRC, for a day on May 16. According to M.S. Mokha, Lt. Col, GSO 1 (Trg) for Comdt. here on Wednesday, eleven help booths would be set up to take up issues concerning the welfare of ex-servicemen.Mr. Mokha has requested all ex-servicemen to attend the rally. — Staff Correspondent

HUBLI: The Bendre Bhavan in Dharwad will host a two-day festival of music and letters on Sunday and Monday organised by the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), New Delhi, Basavaraj Kattimani Vichara Vedike and Avani Rasikara Ranga of Dharwad. In a release, N.P. Bhat, working president of the Avani Rasikara Ranga, said sessions would be held on "Kannada Poetic Tradition and Epoch Making Poets". "Rashtrakavi" G.S. CA exam rescheduled

PANAJI: The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has rescheduled the chartered accountant examinations scheduled for May 2007 in view of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections. According to a press release by the Goa Branch of the Western India Regional Council of (ICAI) on Wednesday, the exams will be held from May 4 to 12 instead of May 3 to11. The revised schedule is available on the website www.icai.org, the release said. — Special Correspondent
