  • Such displays in Bangalore are an eyesore, say MLAs
  • Leaders told to ask party workers not to put them up

BANGALORE: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Thursday told the Legislative Assembly that the State Government was ready to enact legislation to regulate the display of banners and cut-outs, which are destroying the beauty of Bangalore city.

In reply to Jayaprakash Hegde (independent) during Zero Hour, Mr. Kumaraswamy said, "I have already ordered officials to remove all banners, posters and cut-outs put up hailing the achievements of the JD(S)-BJP coalition government around my official residence on Kumara Krupa Road and in the vicinity of the Vidhana Soudha."

He said political parties were also responsible for the display of cut-outs of their leaders in various parts of Bangalore. Party leaders should direct their workers not to put up banners or cut-outs. "If the House is willing, I am ready to bring in legislation," he said.

    `Questionable integrity'

Earlier, Ramesh Kumar (Congress), Vatal Nagaraj (Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha), G.V. Sriram Reddy (CPI-M) and others said that some people, whose integrity was questionable, had put up banners and cut-outs of the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa on which their photographs were displayed. They asked the Government to bring in legislation to curb the menace.

    Denied

Minister for Social Welfare Balachandra Jarkiholi denied that the Government had distributed wristwatches with the Chief Minister photograph to mark his birthday.

In reply to S. Rajendran (RPI) during Question Hour, Mr. Jarkiholi said the Social Welfare Department had not distributed such watches in Kolar.

Earlier, Mr. Rajendran said the Dr. Ambedkar Development Corporation had distributed watches in his constituency, KGF. He displayed a wristwatch, which he said had been distributed in his constituency recently. The watches did not have the name of the manufacturing company or the country of manufacture, he said.

Mr. Rajendran, J.C. Madhuswamy (JD-U) and Mr. Vatal Nagaraj demanded that the Government conduct an inquiry into the matter.
