Congress-PDP row

The ongoing row between the Congress and the People's Democratic Party over reduction of troops in Jammu and Kashmir is unfortunate. Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad is right in saying troops reduction will be possible only when the situation is conducive. Pakistan has lost no opportunity to foment trouble in the strife-torn State. At a time when the political atmosphere in Pakistan is fluid and surcharged, it is not proper on our part to consider troops reduction.

Mr. Azad has categorically said although violence in the State has declined, militancy has not, and the government can ill-afford to be complacent. He is right in saying there should be no politics in security-related issues.

The PDP is making the atrocious demand knowing full well that troops reduction will make the security situation worse, but will quite possibly fetch the party votes. The irony is such moves have been effective in the past. Has not the BJP won playing the religion card?
