Jammu: A prominent Ladakhi Non-Government Organisation, which is credited with spearheading literacy movement in the cold desert, has alleged harassment by the authorities. Sonam Wangchuk is the founder Director of the Students Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh, an NGO. In a written note, the district authorities, among other allegations, have accused him of anti-national connections in China. The same person and the work of his NGO in the field of education were appreciated by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in 2004 when Mr. Wangchuk was nominated to the Governing Council of the National Mission for the achievement of the goal of Universal Elementary Education. Strongly refuting the allegation of working against the country, Mr.Wangchuk told reporters that the district authorities without any substantiation have defamed him as an anti national. He said, "I have no connections whatsoever in China except that I took my mother for a pilgrimage to Lhasa six years ago. If pilgrimage makes one anti-national then so many others including some of our top leaders have also visited Lhasa." According to him the reason appears to be some personal grudge in the higher ups against him.
