BJP legislator's remarks on conversions decried

Special Correspondent

Pastors' body holds demonstration in Tirupati

TIRUPATI: The raging row over alleged evangelical activities on the campus of Sri Padmavathi Mahila Visva Vidyalayam (SPMVV) is becoming more curious day-by-day.

A day after Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Kishen Reddy kicked up a furore on the floor of the House saying that girls were being `doped' and proselytised into Christianity in Tirupati, activists belonging to the United Pastors' Association on Thursday held a rasta roko at the busy Four-Pillar Mandapam in Tirupati.

`Prove charge'

Taking strong exception to the MLA's remarks, the demonstrators led by a few pastors observed a brief rasta roko and wielded placards which read, "Oh Lord Jesus, Pardon Kishen Reddy". In their address, the pastors demanded that the MLA prove his charge or else face a defamation suit in the court of law.

The demonstrators joined issue with the MLA on his allegation that Umamaheswari, the PG student of the university who committed suicide recently was `doped' and converted to Christianity. Maintaining that they would only pray to Lord Jesus to let wiser counsel prevail on Mr. Kishen Reddy, the members of the Christian body regretted that it was unfortunate that the MLA should cast such serious aspersions on the Christian community which was working for the education and medicare of the underprivileged classes in society.
