Village servants launch stir

Seek hike in wages, promotions among other things

ANANTAPUR: The district unit of Andhra Pradesh Gramasevakula Sangham launched an indefinite strike in front of the collectorate here on Thursday alleging that the State Government has failed to redress their long pending demands.

Speaking at the protest, district secretary of CPI (M) G. Obulakonda Reddy, district secretary of Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham P. Peddi Reddy, district president of Gramasevakula Sangham T. Ramulu, general secretary N. Peddanna and others said even the Chief Minister and Revenue Minister failed to keep their word given to the sangham.

Government criticised

The Revenue Minister failed to turn up at talks convened by them on several occasions. There were about 50,000 gram sevaks in the Revenue Department now and they were working for more hours than regular employees with a meagre wages of Rs. 1,200 per month, they said.

The Congress promised to recognise gram sevaks as Class-IV employees before the 2004 Assembly elections but failed to fulfil the same after coming to power, they alleged. Besides, government assurances on hiking the dearness allowance from Rs. 25 to 50, promotions to eligible persons and were also not fulfilled.

They demanded hike in wages to Rs. 3,000 per month in accordance with the rising prices, promotion of all eligible gram sevaks as village revenue officers on seniority basis, hike in dearness allowance to Rs. 50, change in service rules.
