Gulbarga: Members of the Janapara Sangharsha Samiti will hold a "Rasta Sabha" in Gulbarga on March 31, demanding water supply and other facilities. Samiti president Lakshman Dasti told presspersons that people from different localities in the city would join the protest. "Our intention is to highlight our problem of water scarcity," he said. The sabha would be held at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Chowk in the morning. It would go on till officials of the Gulbarga City Corporation (GCC) came to the spot and met protesters, he said.
Earlier protests in vain
"We will not budge till they give a written assurance that the problems will be solved at a scheduled date," he said. "We have petitioned the GCC and the Government many times but in vain, he said. "We have held three protests earlier. But our problems have not been solved. Summer in Gulbarga is very harsh. It has just set in and acute water scarcity has started," he said. Many areas in the city had no water pipelines. People dependent on borewells were facing problems as the groundwater level had gone down, he said. Tanker supply by the GCC was not scientific. People should decide where water should be supplied and not officials, he said. He demanded that the responsibility to supply water in Gulbarga be handed over to the Karnataka Urban Water Supply & Drainage Board (KUWSDB), as in Belgaum, Hubli-Dharwad and Mysore. tIt was doing better than the city corporations, he said.
