Hyderabad financier held for tax evasion

Coimbatore: Income Tax officials on Thursday took into custody a Hyderabad-based financier in Coimbatore on charges of evasion of over Rs. 5 crore.

Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Coimbatore Region, O.P. Sachan, said the financier was wanted by Income Tax authorities in Hyderabad. A police team from Andhra Pradesh will take the financier to Hyderabad on a transit warrant. Officials refused to divulge his name. — Staff Reporter

Dharna by AIR, Doordarshan staff

CHENNAI: Members of the National Federation of Akashvani and Doordarshan Employees (NFADE), an organisation consisting of 22 associations, on Thursday staged sit-in dharna on Doordarshan premises here, demanding that the employees and assets of the All India Radio and the Doordarshan be retained with the Government. The Prasar Bharati Board could act independently.

According to an NFADE release, Prasar Bharati was not financially viable and would not be able to stand on its own as envisaged under the Prasar Bharati Act. Under the circumstances, the employees of AIR and Doordarshan felt that it would be improper for the Government to transfer them to the Prasar Bharati Corporation. — Special Correspondent

Lodge manager arrested

CHENNAI: The `Q' Branch of the State police on Thursday arrested the manager of a lodge at Mannady here under the Passport Act.

An officer of the special unit said inspection of lodges was being carried out when Sivakumar of Annanagar, the manager, was found to be in unauthorised possession of others' passports. Further investigation was on. — Special Correspondent

Kirti Chakra awarded

CHENNAI: Lt. N. Partiban of Pammal in Chennai was awarded the Kirti Chakra (posthumously) on March 21 in recognition of his bravery. According to a Press Information Bureau press release, Lt. Partiban, was posted to 5 Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry. Despite suffering grievous wounds during a counter-insurgency operation, he killed two terrorists single-handedly in a close combat operation before succumbing to bullet injuries. Four terrorists were killed in the operation. Heavy arms and ammunition were recovered. — Special Correspondent

New chairman for CII State Council

CHENNAI: Gopal Srinivasan, director of the TVS Electronics, assumed office as chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry's Tamil Nadu State Council during the annual day celebrations held on Thursday.

Manikam Ramaswami, chairman and managing director, Loyal Textile Mills Ltd, Chennai, has been elected vice-chairman of the council. — Special Correspondent

Lawyers boycott courts

ERODE: Erode lawyers, for the second day on Thursday, boycotted courts demanding an integrated court complex at the Sessions Court premises.

On Wednesday, advocates began a four-day boycott pressing their demand. Advocates, who formed a human chain in front of the court complex, said they would stage a dharna in front of the Government Hospital on Friday. Hundreds of advocates participated in the boycott, which affected courts' functioning.

Summer camp

ERODE: Science Olympiad Foundation will conduct a summer camp from April 9 to 11 at URC Palaniammal School here. The camp, sponsored by the Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre, will have eminent faculty from FIITJEE lecturing students on physics and career guidance. Newborn handed over to 'Cradle Baby' unit

PERAMBALUR: A newborn male, found abandoned at Nakkasalem near here on Sunday, was handed over to the Sisters of the Cross-Society for Education Development (SOC-SEAD), Tiruchi, on Thursday. The infant was under the post-natal care at the `Cradle Baby' unit of the District Headquarters hospital. The District Social Welfare Officer, T. Bhoomadevi, handed over the baby to the SOC-SEAD authorities. So far, 20 infants, including six males, have been rescued under the `Cradle Baby' programme.

Special buses

TIRUCHI: In connection with the `Panguni Uthiram' festival, the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation will run about 100 special buses round the clock from Tiruchi, Manapparai and Karur to Palani from March 31 to April 2 for the benefit of devotees. Special buses would also be operated from Tiruchi Chathiram bus stand to Kumaravayalur, Tiruchi central bus stand to Viralimalai, Karur to Palamalai, Thuraiyur to Chettikulam and Perambalur to Chettikulam on these days.

ACP launched

PUDUKOTTAI: The Annual Credit Plan for 2007-08 envisages a credit flow of Rs.679.15 crore in Pudukottai district, projecting an increase of 16.32 per cent over the previous year. Of this, Rs.553.80 crores has been earmarked for agriculture sector (15 per cent increase), and Rs.41.07 crore for non-farm sector and Rs.84.28 crore for other priority sector. Collector S.J.Chiru released the plan on Thursday. The Indian Overseas Bank Senior Regional Manager T.V.Nagarajan, the Assistant General Manager of Reserve Bank of India, Srinivasan, and Assistant General Manager, NABARD, Kesavamurthy, were present.

Dry days

PUDUKOTTAI: All IMFL retail outlets in Pudukottai district will remain closed on March 31 and April 1 in view of Mahaveer Jayanthi and Nabigal Nayagam birth anniversary respectively.

Grievance day

PUDUKOTTAI: A special grievance redress meeting for ex-servicemen would be held at the Collectorate here at 10 a.m. on March 26. Ex-servicemen from Pudukottai district could represent their grievances, if any, at the meeting, Collector S.J.Chiru has said in a release.

Campus recruitment

Thanjavur: A total of 626 candidates from Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts attended a campus recruitment exercise conducted by IT major WIPRO at Sri AVVM Pushpam College at Poondi near here on Thursday. The selected candidates will be informed in a week's time.

Seminar for students

KARAIKAL: The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Cauvery Asset in Karaikal in the Union Territory of Puducherry, is conducting a seminar on `Career options after Plus-Two' for students at 5.30 p.m. on Friday. A team of professionals from Technocrats India College Finder, Chennai, will give a presentation on various courses and institutions. The seminar will be held at the ONGC campus in Neravy in Karaikal district.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 79.35 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Thursday. The inflow was 972 cusecs and the discharge from the dam was 1,500 cusecs.

Ration rice seized

Tuticorin: A total of 1,250 kilogram of PDS rice was seized from the town here on Thursday. The police arrested Arusunai Moorthy (45) in this connection.

Official sources said that a team of officials led by the District Supply and Consumer Protection Officer, S.R. Sudarshan, intercepted a car driven by Moorthy on the Tuticorin-Tiruchendur Road based on a tip-off.

As many as 25 bags of rice, meant for distribution through PDS, was recovered from it.

Woman found dead

Tuticorin: The body of a woman aged about 70 years was found at South Raja Street here on Wednesday.

The Central police are investigating the case based on a complaint lodged by village administrative officer Moorthy.

The body of a man aged about 38 years was found on the seashore at Tiruchendur near here on Wednesday.

Assumes charge

Tuticorin: P. Muruganandam took over as Regional Transport Officer here on Thursday vice P. Kathirvelu, who retired from service.

He joined the Department of Transport as Assistant Motor Vehicles Inspector in 1988. Prior to the present posting, Mr. Murganandam served as Motor Vehicles Inspector (Grade-I) at Tiruchengode.

DVDs seized

Tuticorin: The police seized 771 pirated Digital Versatile Discs and audio Compact Discs from a shop at Vilathikulam near here on Wednesday.

Two persons were arrested. They were remanded to judicial custody.

Police recruitment

RAMANATHAPURAM: S.S. Krishnamoorthy, Deputy Inspector General of Police, said on Thursday that the selection of Sub Inspectors would be held from March 30 to April 3. Call letters have been sent to 2,323 candidates of Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts.

The selection would be held at Sethakathy-Sethupathy stadium. - Staff Reporter

Former Archbishop's death condoled

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Thursday condoled the death of former Archbishop of Madurai Rt. Rev. Arockiasamy.

Fee for applications under RTI Act

CHENNAI: The State Government on Thursday said those who wanted to avail themselves of information under the Tamil Nadu Right to Information Act, 2005, could remit the fee of Rs.10 also in the form of court fee stamp. — Special Correspondent
