CHENNAI: The 145-year-old Madras High Court got its first woman Registrar-General on Thursday with Chief Justice A.P. Shah appointing R. Mala, a District Judge-cadre judicial officer, to the post.

Ms. Mala will be the 27th Registrar-General of the court.

Her appointment came soon after her predecessor, S. Palanivelu, received his warrant of appointment elevating him as an Additional Judge of the Madras High Court.

Ms. Mala was recruited as a sub-judge in 1989, and promoted as District Judge in 1997. Prior to her present assignment, she was Registrar (Vigilance) of the High Court.

She was deputed as court-appointed commissioner to probe allegations of atrocities against fishermen-residents of K.V.K. Kuppam near Tiruvottiyur and the circumstances surrounding the self-immolation of a transgender person in Chennai. She was also appointed Commissioner of a Coimbatore-based chit fund company, which was before the court for liquidation.

Registrar (Vigilance)

F. Akbar, District Judge and former Member-Secretary of the Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority (TNSLSA), has been appointed Registrar (Vigilance) of the High Court.
