CHENNAI: The State Narcotics Intelligence Bureau (NIB) CID has detected and destroyed, for the first time, well-grown poppy plants in Tamil Nadu. Superintendent of Police of the special unit R. Arumugam said acting on intelligence gathered, the special unit personnel detected poppy plants cultivated on 21.5 cents at Kookal village in Kothagiri Hills in the Nilgiris district. A total of 16,915 plants destroyed in the middle of February. Tonan (47), Thopan (49) and Madhan (33) were arrested. A hunt was on for three others. Mr. Arumugam said they were investigating whether the crop had been raised at the request of smugglers.
275 cases
Up to March 19 this year, the NIB CID had registered 275 cases in the State and arrested 255 persons. Five persons had been detained under the Goondas Act and 614 kg ganja seized from them. In the hilly regions, ganja plants were destroyed by the Theni and the Coimbatore units of the NIB CID.
