IOB crushes Nethaji SC, enters semifinals

Tirunelveli: Six goals, including a hat-trick, by Saravanan, a brace by Mervin Joy and one by Felix helped Indian Overseas Bank (Chennai) thrash Nethaji Sports Club (Kovilpatti) 9-0 and enter the semifinals of the sixth annual TNEB Trophy State-level invitation hockey tournament at the Anna Stadium, Palayamkottai on Thursday.

AG's Friends Hockey Club (Chennai), SAI Hostel (Chennai) and Jamal Mohamed College (Trichy) also entered the last four.

The results: Quarterfinals: IOB, Chennai 9 (Saravanan 6, including a hat-trick, Mervin Joy 2, Felix) bt Nethaji SC (Kovilpatti) 0; AG's Friends HC, Chennai 3 (Anbu, Raja, Sudalaimuthu) bt Jothi SC (Palayamkottai) 0; SAI Hostel, Chennai 7 (S. Kannan 2, Isaac Jebaraj 2, Anand Rajesh, A.S. David, Ruban) bt Madurai Juniors 0; Jamal Mohamed College, Trichy 7 (Etraj, Saravanan, T.B. — Dinesh, Prabu, Irudayaraj, S.D. — Dinesh, Irudayaraj) bt TNEB 6 (Ganesh Murthy 2, T.B. — Ganesh Murthy, Balamurugan, Duraisingam, S.D. — Balamurugan) via sudden death, tie-breaker 3-3, Regulation time 2-2.

Sarvanan scores two

At Karaikudi, a brace by Saravanan helped Chidambaram Memorial Football Club (K. Velangudi) defeat Friends Football Club (Kandanur) 2-0 in the Sivagangai DFA `B' Division league at the AUCPE ground on Thursday.

In another match, Young Men's Football Club (Kattuthalaivasal) and Indian Football Club (K. Alagapuri) played out a goalless draw.

IICTHM triumphs

Indian Institute of Catering Technology and Hotel Management (IICTHM) Industrial School collected 13 points to emerge the overall champion in the first district sports meet for industrial schools at the Good Shepherd Seminary in Mayleripalayam on Thursday.

St. Joseph's Industrial School (Coimbatore) finished runner-up with eight points.

K. Jayseegan Paul of IICTHM tallied nine points for the boys' individual championship.

The results: Games: Overall championship: 1. IICTHM Industrial School (Ondipudur) 13 points; 2. St. Joseph's Industrial School (Coimbatore) 8.

Athletics: Boys': Individual championship: Jayseegan Paul (IICTHM Industrial School) 9.

Sports coaching course

The Sports Authority of India through its academic wing NS NIS will conduct a six-week certificate course in sports coaching at its training centres from May 17 to June 25.

Applications can be had from the District Sports Officer, Nehru Stadium (Coimbatore) and the Regional Inspector of Physical Education. The last date for applications is March 28.

OFT SA posts win

At Tiruchi, OFT SA defeated P&T Durai MFC 2-1 in a Tiruchi District Football Association first division league tie here on Thursday. Kesavan struck for OFT, while Christopher Roysten Engels reduced the margin.

Chess championship

The Pudukottai District Chess Association will conduct the fifth Tamil Nadu State under-18 and under-16 rapid chess championship for boys and girls on April 22 and 23 at Oxford Catering College, Pudukottai. For details call, 9843584015.
