PATHANAMTHITTA: Hundreds of people witnessed the annual `kettukazhcha' as part of the Meena-Bharani festival at Orippurathu Bhagavathy Temple at Thatta, near Adoor, on Thursday.

The festival began with the Bhagavathom recital in the morning.

The `ezhunallippu' (procession) as part of the `kettukazhcha' was in the afternoon.

The `kettukazhcha' involved a splendid display of towering decorated chariots made of wooden planks belonging to seven local karayogams.

Rolling out of the decorated chariots onto the road by the seven local karayogams of Edamaly, Parakkara, Mallika, Bhagavathikkum-padinjaru, Vayalinum-padinjaru, Padukottackal and Pongalady was delayed for nearly an hour owing to showers.

The Garudan Thookom, reminiscent of the Narabali ritual of the yore, will be held at the temple on Friday morning.

The Thiruvathira festival at the temple will be celebrated on Monday.
