Treat eye problems early: DC

HASSAN: Deputy Commissioner K.H. Ashwathnarayana Gowda, who is also Chairman of the District Blindness Eradication Committee, has advised doctors to identify eye problems in children early and take corrective measures. He was presiding over a meeting of the committee at his office on Tuesday.

Programme Officer of the District Blindness Eradication Committee Bhishmachari said that between April 2006 and February 2007, contact lens had been provided to 2,512 men and 2,938 women, and 98 men and 80 women had been operated on for cataract.

He said 888 eye patients had received treatment at the mobile ophthalmology unit treatment, 680 at the district hospital, and 4,237 at other hospitals and voluntary organisations during the same period.

Eye tests had been conducted on 59,000 school children, of who 7,760 children were found to have eyesight problems. Free spectacles had been provided to 1,041 children, hesaid.

District Health Officer Nagaraja Rao and office bearers from voluntary and social organisations were present.
