Hosur: Four persons including three of a family were killed and 12 seriously injured in an explosion apparently caused by LPG leakage in an apartment here on Thursday. The blast brought down the first and second floors of the building.

The victims were identified as Sundaramahalingam (45), Chandran (40), his wife Saritha (38) and their daughter Lavanya (6).

According to the police, the incident occurred around 6.40 a.m. in the ground floor of a Tamil Nadu Housing Board complex on Rayakottai Road.

Leakage from a gas cylinder and an attempt to light a stove or switch on an electric gadget might have triggered the explosion. However, the LPG cylinder remained intact.

Fire and Rescue Services personnel, with the help of the Hosur police and residents, rescued those trapped in the debris. The injured were admitted to the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences in Bangalore.

Critical

The condition of two of the injured was stated to be critical.

Authorities suspect that the gas remained confined to the room without any outlet.

District Collector Santhosh Babu and Superintendent of Police P.C. Thenmozhi supervised the rescue operations.

Efforts were on to look for and rescue any more survivors and remove the debris.

The Collector disbursed a solatium of Rs. 50,000 each to the next kin of the dead, Rs. 15,000 to those with serious injuries and Rs. 5,000 to the other injured.
