110 doctors to be dismissed

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has, as the second stage of its action, decided to dismiss from service 110 doctors belonging to some two and half dozen specialities who have been unauthorisedly absenting themselves from work from the various Government Medical Colleges in the State. Those of them who are interested in rejoining service are to report before K.A.Kumari Lekshmi, Under Secretary, Health and Family Welfare within 15 days. — Special Correspondent

Restriction on milk goes

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Thiruvananthapuram Regional Cooperative Milk Producers Union has fully withdrawn all the restrictions on the distribution of milk. This follows further easing of the situation with the arrival of milk from Maharashtra. The strengthening of distribution by procuring as much milk from Karnataka and milk powder from Gujarat had already eased the situation. Whatever shortage existed even after that has been bridged now. — Special Correspondent

KSEB to repay bonds

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) will repay bonds amounting to Rs.10.195 crore on March 31. It is the third instalment of its Non-SLR Bond Series VIIA issued during 1999-2000. Intimation in this respect has already been issued to the bondholders. The `at par' cheques for the subject redemption along with interest have already been sent to the bondholders. Others should surrender their bond certificates and collect the redemption cheques from the office of the Financial Advisor at Vydyuthi Bhavanam, Thiruvananthapuram.

Good Friday may become a dry day

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government is considering declaring Good Friday a dry day, Minister for Excise P.K. Gurudasan has said in the Assembly on Thursday. Replying to a submission from CPI(M) MLA V.N. Vasavan, Mr. Gurudasan said that two other members of the House, P.C. George and Roshy Augustine, had also made this representation to the Government. He said that, ideally, the people themselves should observe abstinence on Good Friday. — Special Correspondent

Chembai award

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: K. Harish Narayanan of Palakkad has been selected for the Chembai Cash Award 2006. The award, instituted by the Kerala Government, carries a purse of Rs.5,000 and a citation. The award will be presented by Minister for Culture M.A. Baby at a function in his chambers on Monday. P. Gopalaraman, chairman, Chembai Memorial Trust, will honour Mr. Narayanan by presenting a `ponnada' and the Chembai medallion. — Staff Reporter

VS lays stress on public hygiene

MATTANNUR: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has urged local bodies to give emphasis to hygiene and healthy environment while planning. Inaugurating the newly constructed municipal bus stand here on Thursday, Mr. Achuthanandan said healthy surroundings and public hygiene had acquired importance in development.

Prohibition council to continue protest

KOZHIKODE: The Kerala Madya Nirodhana Samithi will continue its protests demanding withdrawal of the "anti-people" liquor policy of the State Government. T.M. Raveendran, general secretary of the Kozhikode district committee of the Samithi, said as part of the second phase of the protest programme, a dharna will be held by prohibitionists in front of the Collectorate on March 24.

Law College closed

THRISSUR: Government Law College here has been closed down indefinitely after its Principal was gheraoed by activists of the Kerala Students Union and the Akhil Bharatheeya Vidhyarthe Parishad on Thursday. The police said that the trouble started when SFI activists reportedly asked a teacher to stop classes in view of the Achutha Menon Lecture being held at the college. When the teacher refused, SFI activists shouted slogans and allegedly smashed windowpanes. Activists of the KSU and the ABVP gheraoed the Principal in protest against the SFI action. About 30 activists were arrested and removed by the police. A High Court judge was in the college to attend the function. — Staff Reporter

Elected

THRISSUR: N.A. Babu and K.V. Shaju were elected president and secretary respectively of the Kerala Medical and Sales Representatives Association at its 44th district conference here on Thursday.

The other office-bearers are K.V. Sugathan (vice-president), S. Gopalakrishnan (joint secretary), V.S. Manoj (treasurer). A 19-member district committee has also been formed. — Staff Reporter

Panel constituted

Thiruvananthapuram: The Finance Inspection Wing has set up a committee, comprising the former chief engineer Komalavally Amma and CESS director M. Baba, to probe into the irregularities in the construction work at Arattupuzha. Minister for Water Resources N.K. Premachandran said here on Thursday that the committee had been set up for a detailed inquiry following the detection of irregularities in the work undertaken during 2005-06 by a preliminary inquiry conducted by the Chief Technical Examiner. He said the chief engineer had been asked to take immediate steps to check sea erosion at Arattupuzha taking into consideration the coast's peculiarities even though there was a case connected with the construction of the Tharayilkadavu seawall. — Special Correspondent
