Dairy farmers Bill goes to Subject Committee

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Assembly on Thursday referred the Kerala Dairy Farmers' Welfare Fund Bill, 2007, to its Subject Committee.

Piloting the Bill, Minister in charge of Animal Husbandry C. Divakaran said this legislative initiative was to set up a welfare fund to ensure for the dairy farmers, a majority of them poor, social security in the form of old age pension and assistance in times of dire need. There are nearly fourteen lakh families who have adopted cattle rearing as their means of livelihood in the State. Only around two lakh of them have taken membership in the primary dairy cooperative societies.
