Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) on Thursday staged a dharna in front of the Secretariat and 13 District Collectorates in protest against the "anti-people policies" of the Left Front Government and its administrative failure during the 10 months it has been in power.

Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy inaugurating the Secretariat dharna said inaction marked the LDF Government's rule. He alleged that prisons were being converted into a beehive of political activity with CPI(M) prisoners getting favourable treatment. The Congress agitation also focussed on price rise, deterioration of law and order situation, politicisation of the education sector, failure to tackle farmers' suicides and the new liquor policy.

KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala, who inaugurated the Kozhikode dharna, said the LDF Government that was celebrating the jubilee of the 1957 EMS Ministry was taking the State back to the "cell rule" of that period. He said the Congress party would continue to fight against "the CPI(M) highhandedness."

The dharna was inaugurated by V.M. Sudheeran in Kollam, M.M. Hassan in Kottayam, C.V. Padmarajan in Pathanamthitta, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan in Alappuzha, P.C. Chacko in Idukki, K. Sudhakaran in Ernakulam, Thennala Balakrishna Pillai in Thirssur, M.I. Shanavas in Palakkad, Thalekunnil Basheer in Malappuram, K..P Unnikrishnan in Wayanad, P P Thankachan in Kannur and Mullapally Ramachandran in Kasaragod.

The dharna was peaceful in all districts except in Ernakulam. Tension prevailed for some time when miscreants threw stones at a procession taken out by the Congress workers.
