BHUBANESWAR: Women's organisations on Thursday stepped up their agitation seeking a CBI probe into the death of a woman constable Manorama Basantray after a local court acquitted the two accused police officers in the case. A large number of activists holding banners descended on the Mahatma Gandhi Road to draw the attention of the top political brass attending the ongoing Assembly session to the "faulty police investigation into the case." The 23-year-old constable was found shot dead inside the official residence of Mrutyunjay Narayan Panda, then officer in-charge of the Kanpur police station in Cuttack district in March 2002. The bullet was fired from the service revolver of Mr. Panda.
Lack of evidence
A local court in Cuttack exonerated Mr. Panda and another policeman, who were charged with rape and murder of Basantray, due to lack of sufficient evidences. However, the court was critical of the improper investigation, which led to their exoneration. Tapasi Praharaj of All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) said though the State Commission for Women recommended handing over the case to the CBI, the government did not take any action. They said that the two accused persons should not be reinstated in their jobs till the case was over.
