MLA local area fund hiked

Special Correspondent

BHUBANESWAR: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Thursday informed the Assembly that the MLA Local Area Development Fund would be hiked from the existing Rs. 50 lakhs to Rs. 75 lakhs with effect from the current financial year.

The Chief Minister made the announcement after legislators, cutting across party lines, raised the demand and wanted to know about the delay in implementation of the hike that was promised by him last year.

While opposition members said that Mr. Patnaik should apologise for the delay in implementing the increase in their local area development fund, the ruling party legislators also said that it was a matter of shame that the government had not been able to keep its promise.

Mr. Patnaik's announcement that the hike would come into effect from the current fiscal was welcomed by all.
