FOR A FAIR DEAL: Anganwadi workers staging a demonstration before the Assembly in Bhubaneswar on Thursday.
BHUBANESWAR: Hundreds of anganwadi workers on Thursday staged a demonstration in front of the State Assembly seeking government employee status. "We are discharging our duties with sincerity, irrespective of the heavy burden. Our demand is not only just reasonable but also quite legal," Gourimani Pradhan, general secretary of Nikhila Orissa Anganwadi Karmi Sangha (NOAKS), said.
Social security
Demanding a concrete social security for anganwadi workers, the members said the State government should bear the extra expenses for the extra work being executed by them. "The government should facilitate group insurance to anganwadi workers and helpers. The workers should cent per cent be considered for promotion as supervisor on the basis of their seniority and qualification," she said. Their other demands included setting up of grievance redressal mechanism, incentive for anganwadi workers forming self help groups and payment of minimum wage for anganwadi workers and helpers.
