Council poll: YSR first to vote

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Election of candidates for the Legislative Council from MLAs' quota on Thursday had all the elements of drama and enthusiasm. There was bonhomie and camaraderie through the polling period as the ruling party and opposition MLAs kept bumping into one another until Congress and TDP MLAs had a heated argument over the issuance of a second ballot paper to Chitturi Bapineedu.

Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy was the first to cast his vote at 9 a.m. while TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu came at 9.40 a.m. Barring CPI (ML) New Democracy MLA Gummadi Narsaiah, all the 294 MLAs exercised franchise.

The Congress sent its MLAs in batches, each led by a Minister. P. Janardhan Reddy and M. Sashidhar Reddy came with Home Minister K. Jana Reddy to vote. Sources said rebel TRS MLAs — Mandadi Satyanarayana Reddy and S. Santosh Reddy — took ballot papers for the second time saying that they could not mark their preference properly in the original ballot.
