MANGALORE: The Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University K.M. Kaveriappa said on Thursday that it was important to assess if Women's Studies would to attract students in terms of employment opportunities if the subject was introduced as a separate course by a university or an education institution. He was addressing a gathering at the inauguration of a workshop on "Mainstreaming gender in the curriculum" organised by the Centre for Women Studies at Mangalagangotri, Mangalore University.
`On the rise'
Dr. Kaveriappa said that the number of women seeking higher education was on the rise. The post-graduation campus of the university was not an exception to this, he said. Sumi Krishna, president of the Indian Association of Women Studies, Bangalore, said that the association was attempting to institutionalise women's studies in India. Jaya Indiresan, retired professor, National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration, Delhi, said that the status of women in India was better when compared to their status in some countries such as Japan and the U.S. Women's studies did not get the recognition it deserved, she said.
