Lok Satta urges Governor to protect dignity of Council

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Lok Satta has appealed to Governor Rameshwar Thakur to protect the dignity of the Legislative Council and maintain the spirit of the Constitution by ensuring that the 12 members to be nominated by him are eminent enough.

In a memorandum submitted to the Governor, the party's National Coordinator Jayaprakash Narayan recalled that Article 171 (5) of the Constitution specified that such nominations should go to people having special knowledge or practical experience drawn from the fields of literature, science, art, cooperative movement and social service.

The nominations were intended to bring expertise, sobriety, wisdom and credibility to the Upper House. But things seem to be working vice-versa .

The ruling party was blatantly trying to rehabilitate its party dissidents using the Governor's quota.
