KOCHI: A meeting chaired by Mayor Mercy Williams on Thursday reviewed the progress of the decentralised garbage treatment drive being taken up with the participation of residents associations in the city. Garbage treatment plants have been set up in a couple of divisions in the corporation and work is progressing in nearly 10 divisions. A decentralised garbage treatment project cell has been constituted under the charge of Mohammed Kasim, Health Supervisor, and Alosyius, Senior Health Inspector. "We are trying to get a toll-free telephone line for the cell so that doubts on the project can be cleared," said Ms. Williams. The cell will study the requirement for setting up plants in each division. "There will not be need for garbage treatment plants in all division, as one plant may cater to a couple of them. The cell will finalise the number of plants required," the Mayor said. The proposals for new plants have been awaiting approval at the projects department, which remains overburdened with assignments related to preparing schemes for Kerala Development Project and Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. "Plots have been identified in most of the cases. Once the projects are cleared, they could be implemented in a time-bound manner," she said. On their part, the representatives of the Ernakulam District Residents Association Apex Council extended all support for the drive. P.S. Bhasi and K.K. Abdul Nazar, secretaries, and T. Radhakrishnan, vice-president of EDRAAC, attended the meeting.
Committee formed
A 15-member committee with K.M. Sunil Kumar and A.B. Lalan as conveners was formed to distribute one meal and dress for 350-odd inmates of Palluruthy Relief Shelter. The food and dress have been collected during the initiative of Adarsh Residents' Welfare Association, Binny Road, Palluruthy. Material collected will be distributed at a meeting on April 29. A. Jayakumar, president of ARWA, will preside. This column is an attempt to reach out to our readers.
