VOICING THEIR PROTEST: Congress workers staging a dharna in front of the Kanayannur taluk office on Thursday in protest against the Left Democratic Front Government's "anti-people" policies. Photo: Vipinchandran
KOCHI: Hundreds of Congress workers on Thursday morning took out a march from High Court Junction to the Kanayannur taluk office where they staged a dharna in protest against the LDF Government's "anti-people" policies. The protest was part of a State-level agitation in which marches and dharnas were held at all district headquarters and towns. The city police, anticipating trouble, had taken extra security measures. The protest turned a little violent as some of the marchers allegedly threw stones at a KSRTC bus and the Government guesthouse. The police rounded up five youths who were later remanded.
CPI(M) stance flayed
K. Sudhakaran, MLA and KPCC general secretary, who flagged off the march and inaugurated the dharna, said that the CPI(M), like the epic character Ravana, had several faces. While the party opposed filling up small pieces of paddy fields for building residential houses in Kerala, the CPI(M)-led Government in West Bengal was forcibly acquiring hundreds of acres of farmland for setting up Special Economic Zones (SEZs). Again, in Maharashtra, the party was totally against SEZs. Mr. Sudhakaran alleged that Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, who towered over Kerala while he was the Leader of the Opposition, was now inactive, helpless and frustrated. He could not take a decision on Smart City, Kochi metro rail project and many other projects, the MLA alleged. District Congress Committee president V.J. Paulose, KPCC secretary T.P. Hassan, and K. Babu, MLA, were among those who spoke at the dharna.
