HYDERABAD: Making a fervent plea for minimising wastage of drinking water, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Thursday announced that daily drinking water supply would be introduced in all parts of the State Capital in six to nine months. Round-the-clock supplies introduced on a trial basis in Adikmet area would also be extended to the entire city in a phased manner in five to six years. "In the same period, I want all the households of the city covered with water connections," he suggested. He was speaking at the valedictory function of the World Water Day celebrations organised by the Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board here.
Krishna water
The Chief Minister, giving a detailed account of the hardships and huge costs involved in pumping Krishna water to the city from Nagarjunasagar 120 km away and 400 metres below, said the Krishna Drinking Water Supply Project yielded 90 Million Gallons in the first phase and an equal volume was expected in the second phase to be commissioned soon. "The fruits of any Government plan can be fully successful only when there is complete public participation. With crores of rupees being spent on hauling water to the doorstep of people, the onus is on them to use it judiciously and save every drop," he said.
Competitions
The concept found a true reflection in the works and words of 2,000 odd students drawn from various schools and colleges of the twin cities in the competitions organised by the HMWSSB on the theme `Every drop counts'. One student captured the concept on canvas with the phrase, `Every drop of water is as precious as a drop of blood'! Another chose to depict it through a cartoon where two farmers under a torrid sun dig up bounties. One is ecstatic finding water and another crestfallen discovering pure gold! In an almost desert like backdrop, sun beating down relentlessly, there is the desperate sight of a man trying to quench his thirst from a cactus plant! Information Minister Mohd. Ali Shabbir, MP Anjan Kumar Yadav, MLA Mukesh, senior officials S.P. Singh, Veena Ish and K.S. Jawahar Reddy were present.
