CHENNAI : Unidentified miscreants torched two lorries parked on a street under the Ashok Nagar police station limits on Wednesday night.

For the third consecutive night, miscreants indulged in the incendiary act and people in the locality are in a state of shock.

On Monday night, as many as seven two-wheelers were damaged in fire.

Even as the residents complained to the Vadapalani police, the following night miscreants set fire to three cars parked inside a compound on South Sivan Koil Street, and destroyed three motorcycles in the same locality.

Close on the heels, for the third successive night on Wednesday, two lorries parked on Karnar Street at Ashok Nagar were destroyed.

According to the complainants, "the drivers had parked the vehicles near the lorry office and went home. But, at around 1.30 a.m., we heard some big noise on the street and to our shock, we spotted two lorries burning. Even before the fire service and rescue personnel arrived one lorry was completely destroyed, while the other was badly damaged", they said.

On information, senior police officers visited the scene of crime, but they were yet to nab the accused.

The Ashok Nagar police have registered a case.

But the residents blamed the police for their lackadaisical approach.

An elder citizen on Karnar Street said that despite the handiwork of miscreants in the last two nights, the police had not taken steps to watch the movement of suspects.

When contacted, Additional Commissioner of Police S. R. Jangid said he had instructed all police stations in the city, particularly the Vadapalani and Ashok Nagar stations to step up vigil during nights.

"We have been checking and questioning people who move during nights in suspicious manner," he said.

He expressed the hope that the culprits would be nabbed soon.
