SUMMER COOL: A woman traffic constable wearing a solar hat. - PHOTO: S. SIVA SARAVANAN
Coimbatore: Traffic constables in Coimbatore reeling under the scorching sun can heave a sigh of relief. Instead of the routine peak caps, they have been provided with heat-resistant solar hats. City Police Commissioner C.K. Gandhirajan told The Hindu that the normal peak cap was not convenient for traffic constables, especially during the peak summer. It caused discomfort because of excessive sweating besides transmitting heat on to the body leading to frequent ailments for the police personnel. The solar hats have already become part of the police uniform and will be supplied in police stores. The hat has a layer of coir pith inside with a cloth with mesh weaving. The hat has an outer cover in khaki with the Tamil Nadu emblem. The holes in the hat would enable ventilation and prevent sweating. The material used in the hat is heat-resistant. The hat costs close to Rs. 100 in the Government store and about Rs. 200 in the open market. The police administration will also ensure that their personnel wear a mask - filter on their faces while on duty. The masks have already been supplied to them. The department has planned to sensitise the police to the harms caused by vehicular pollution.
