News Analysis
* The caption of the accompanying photograph in a report "NDA requests President to visit Nandigram" (March 23, 2007) was: "A Joint Appeal: A delegation led by Leader of the Opposition L.K. Advani coming out of the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on Thursday after submitting a memorandum to President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. Along with him are (from left) BJP president Rajnath Singh, party general secretary Digvijay Singh and NDA convener George Fernandes." Mr. Digvijay Singh is a senior leader of the JD(U).
* In a Guardian report "First lies and now, even worse: more help" (Op-Ed, March 22, 2007), a sentence was: "Business will emerge from the bottom up, and doctors, teachers, and merchants will start to move back from Amman and Damascus, once they hear that their old homes are safe and the Mahdists and Badrists are confined to the barracks." A reader wondered who the Badrists are. The office of the Readers' Editor, The Guardian, clarifies that it is one of the Shia militias, followers of Badr.
* In The Hindu Crossword 8867 (March 22, 2007), clue 17 Across was "Sherpas I'm grouping as angelic beings of old (9)", and the solution (March 23, 2007) was "Seraphims". A reader points out that the word "seraphims" is not possible, since the plural of "seraph" is "seraphim" or "seraphs". The compiler clarifies that the reader is right. "Seraph" is singular and "seraphim", plural. However, the word "seraph" had older forms "seraphin" and "seraphim", for which the plurals were "seraphins" and "seraphims". The double plural form, "seraphims", is sometimes used as in the King James version of the Bible, Isa. vi. 2 and 6.
* The expansion of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led DPA is Democratic Progressive Alliance, and not the Democratic People's Alliance as stated in a report "South African model for resolving water disputes" (March 23, 2007). (The same correction pointing this out appeared in this column yesterday.) It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible.
