Vijender enters final

HYDERABAD: Vijender, the Doha Asian Games bronze medallist, was too good for R. Rajesh of Tamil Nadu in the semifinals of the middleweight category of the Senior National boxing championship at Swarnandhra Pradesh indoor stadium (Gachibowli) here on Friday.

Vijender displayed better class and consistency from the start with a series of powerful right and left hooks which had the opponent running for cover. Vijender notched up a whopping 22-2 point lead in the first round itself, forcing the referee to stop the contest and declare him the winner.

In the lightweight category semifinal, Jai Bhagwan, who represented India in the Doha Asian Games, ended the Andhra challenge in the championship when he outpunched R. Anil. Jai Bhagwan won 24-10.

In the welterweight category semifinal, former National champion Dilbagh Singh (RSPB) got the better of J. Ramaiya, a native of Mahabubnagar district of Andhra Pradesh, but representing Madhya Pradesh here, with a 14-7 win.

Feather wt: Diwakar Prasad (Rlys) bt A.L. Lakra (Ser) 34-28; Chote Lal (Jhar) bt Amandeep Singh (Police) 33-12.

Lt. wt: K.T.T. Singh (Ser) bt Ganesh Giri (Utk) 26-7; Jai Bhagwan (Rlys) bt R. Anil (AP) 24-10.
