KOCHI: The sixth Commonwealth India Small Business Development Programme will begin here on Sunday. The six-day event will be inaugurated by Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan and Union Minister for Small Scale Industries and Agro and Rural Industries Mahabir Prasad. The programme will be inaugurated at Hotel Taj Malabar. Sessions will also be held in Alappuzha and Kalady. Delegates from 34 Commonwealth countries from all continents in the world will participate in the programme, said A.C. Jose, chairman of Coir Board, here on Thursday at a press conference. The programme is being jointly organised by the Coir Board and the Export-Import Bank of India and the theme of the programme is ``SMEs An engine of poverty alleviation, employment generation and export development,'' said Mr. Jose. He said the programme was in line with the work of the Commonwealth and the Coir Board on sustainable development. A major focus of the programme would be Kerala's socio-economic development. This would include empowerment of women.
