KOCHI: Ground-breaking ceremony for the rail link to the proposed International Container Transhipment Terminal (ICTT) on Vallarpadam Island was held here on Friday in the presence of a large number of people and officials from Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), that is executing the rail link project, Cochin Port Trust, India Gateway Terminals Limited (IGTL), Goshree Islands Development Authority (GIDA) and the district administration.

The 8.86-km track will cost a total of Rs.246 crore and is expected to be completed by March 2009. The track will take off from the proposed Vallarpadam yard, crosses existing road linking the Goshree bridges 2 and 3, enters the backwaters and moves via Mulavukad, reaches Vaduthala. From here it will cross the Chittoor road to reach Edappally.

An official communication here said that the rail-bridge track would not affect the existing road traffic in any way. While RVNL is doing the rail link work, the physical work is being carried out by Afcons Infrastructure Limited.
