BANGALORE: In the first conviction in the multi-crore fake stamp paper cases tried in Karnataka, the special court on Friday found key accused Abdul Kareem Telgi and four others guilty of forgery and cheating the Government and a private company of Rs. 42.75 lakh. Judge Vishwanath V. Angadi convicted Telgi, Bhadrudddin, Irfan Ahmed, Wazir Ahmed Salik and Pradeep Kumar, all partners in Cauvery Enterprises, for forging documents such as the challan receipt of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and using fake embossing seal of the RBI on a sale deed related to Sami Labs Ltd. situated in Peenya Industrial Estate here. The sentence will be announced on Saturday. The case, registered by the Peenya police in 2003, was among the 28 investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The CBI had argued that Telgi's four associates, representing Cauvery Enterprises, had approached Sami Labs Ltd. in May 1999 and offered their services to register the company's property worth Rs. 3.8 crore. The accused then forged the documents and embossed them with fake seals. Senior CBI counsel P. Govindan told the court that it was established that the accused had failed to deposit the money with the RBI and that they had used fake seal on the documents of Sami Labs Ltd. The sale proceeds were deposited in a bank account opened by Irfan Ahmed while Pradeep Kumar passed them on to Telgi.
