Showcasing Australia

Parul Sharma

Two exhibitions on in Delhi

NEW DELHI: Australia is all set be the flavour of the Capital, at least for the next few days.

Two exhibitions on textiles and garments and contemporary jewellery and hollowware from the continent will be inaugurated by Australian High Commissioner John McCarthy on Saturday.

The first exhibition "Akira Isogawa: Printemps-E'te'" charts the creative journey behind the production of designer Isogawa's "Printemps-E'te' Collection 2005" that he presented during the Paris Fashion Week three years ago.

The exhibition reveals the process by which Isogawa -- one of Australia's most successful designers who left his native country Japan at the age of 21 -- has transformed his sources of inspiration into the form of garments.

The stages of the designer's creative journey are carefully documented in the exhibition.

The second one "Beyond Metal: Contemporary Australian Jewellery and Hollowware" is characterised by a uniquely Australian aesthetic that embraces raw as well as recycled materials, innovative design and use of technology and a "respectfully playful" approach to tradition.

The exhibition encourages reflection on perceptions of jewellery making and metal-smithing as it introduces and emphasises the quality and value of design in the work of contemporary Australian practitioners.

The exhibitions are being presented as part of "AusArts India: Film, Arts, Literature", a two-year promotion of Australian contemporary arts in India by the Australian Government. Focussing on film, visual art and design, literature and the performing arts, this initiative showcases the vitality and innovation of the current Australian arts practice.

Both the exhibitions will me mounted at Lalit Kala Akademi, Rabindra Bhawan, and will be on view till April 4.
